Starting next month, a trial program will let citizens apply for their first passport without traveling to the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Instead they''ll only have to go so far as their local household registration office, before paying the application fee at a convenience store. The turnaround time will be twice as long as the current four work days. But for some applicants, the convenience could be worth the wait. Applying for a passport involves a trip to the Bureau of Consular Affairs and a day of wrangling red tape. An easier way is coming soon.On March 16, select household registration offices will start doing more than issue household certificates and national IDs. The Bureau of Consular Affairs and interior ministry have connected their databases, to allow e-Gate applications and first-time passport applications at household registration offices. Pay the fee at a convenience store and in eight days, the passport will be ready for pickup at the household registration office. If it’s not, then there is no rush, and I’d go to the place that’s most convenient.During the trial period, the application service will be offered at all household registration offices in Taoyuan and Yunlin, and at select offices in Taichung, Chiayi, Pingtung and Penghu. We expect to carry out trials for half a month. If everything goes smoothly during the trial period and no adjustments to the system need to be made, the goal will be to roll out the program nationwide by April or May.The Department of Household Registration says that if all goes well, every new passport applicant will be able to file their paperwork locally, as early as April.
