What is Valentine’s Day & How Did it Start? - Today's Biggest News

What is Valentine’s Day & How Did it Start? - Today's Biggest News Welcome to our guide to Valentine's Day or St. Valentine's Day or The Worst Day of the Year For Single People, whatever you like to call it. So where did it start? Well it's surrounded by question marks, in a love heart I'm guessing, but it's been around for thousands of years. The name comes from St Valentine, although we don't know which St Valentine, and the first official Valentine's Day was in 496. By the 1500s it really started to get popular, with people sending messages to the ones they loved.

Today, it's still a thing and it's big business. Billions of dollars are spent around the world on stuff like cards, chocolates, dinner dates and, of course, flowers. And here in Australia florists and growers are calling for people to buy native flowers instead of imported roses to support local businesses on this romantic day. So that's Valentines Day for you, I guess it's a nice excuse to tell someone you love them, if you have someone to love.

CYCLONE UESI
It hasn't been a lovely day for residents of Lord Howe Island, they woke up to serious damage from Cyclone Uesi. Winds brought down trees and damaged buildings with gusts reaching more than 125 kilometres per hour. Locals are already busy cleaning up.

ANTARCTICA HEATING UP
Things are heating up in Antarctica, but it's got nothing to do with Valentine's day. Temperature's rose above 20 degrees Celsius for the first time on record. Global warming's causing ice to melt, it recently led to this iceberg splitting from a glacier and it was all captured on satellite.

MATILDAS CLOSER TO THE OLYMPICS
Alright, let me set the scene, it's the last group game of the AFC Olympic Qualifiers Tournament. All Australia has to do is not lose to China. All good so far, yep perfect. Tokyo Olympics here we come...

Alright, new scene, there's only one minute left and we need one goal. Cue Matilda's Star Emily Van Egmond. This last minute thunderbolt meant Australia went through top of their table. Now all they have to do is beat Vietnam, and they're through to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

HORSE BALL IN KYRGYZSTAN
Now here's something you probably won't see at the Tokyo Olympics. These guys are playing a game called horse ball, where riders try and throw this ball into here. The sport is gaining popularity here in Kyrgystan, so this year they held the game in a park in the capital city, and boy were the fans excited.

SONYA THE SKATING DOG
Alright everyone meet Sonya, the French bulldog with some serious skating skills. Sonya's been skating since she was a puppy and her owner Dimtry insists that she's a natural born shredder. They only skate together a couple times a week though, anything more and she'll hurt her tiny little paws.

POLAR BEAR CUBS
You know what's loved by everyone everywhere? Cute baby animals! And this has to be one of the cutest. Nora the polar bear gave birth to this little bub at an Austrian Zoo in November last year, and Valentine's Day is her very first public appearance!

KOALA GETTING A MASSAGE
Who loves a really good massage? We do! And if this koala could talk it'd probably say "Me too!" The furry friend was rescued during the recent bushfires on South Australia's Kangaroo Island and got a really satisfying belly scratch from this army vet for its troubles.

CHOCOLATE FASHION
Because this is our ultimate love... chocolate! And fashion. Chocolate fashion. OK, maybe just mine. Models in the chocolate capital of the world Belgium strutted their stuff in some amazing, but probably very sweaty creations as part of a big chocolate fair!
