In this video, we discuss the topic as, nutrition and mode of nutrition from chapter Life Processes of CBSE Class 10 Science.

The first thing to know is, What is Nutrition?

Nutrition - The process of taking food inside the body and converting it into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body is called Nutrition.

The need for nutrition: Nutrition is needed to provide energy for doing any activity and provide essential nutrients for life processes.

Nutrients: Materials that provide nutrition to organisms are called nutrients.

Types of Nutrients
- Carbohydrates
- Fats
- Proteins
- Vitamins
- Minerals

Carbohydrates and Fats supply energy for nutrition.

Mode of Nutrition

1) Autotrophic mode of nutrition

It is a mode of nutrition in which a living organism prepares its own food.
It is not dependent on other living organisms.
It also called Autotrophs.

2) Heterotrophic mode of nutrition

It is a mode of nutrition in which an organism depends on another organism for food.
It also called Heterotrophs.

Now, Heterotrophic modes of nutrition are also divided into three (3) types.

1) Herbivores
2) Carnivores
3) Omnivores

Herbivore
Any organism that eats only plants will be classified as an herbivore.
For example - Elephant, Cow

Carnivore
Any organism that sustains itself solely on meat is classified as a carnivore.
For example - Lion, Tiger, Snake

Omnivore
Any organism that can eat both plants and animals is an omnivore.
For example - Crow, Human
