Air pollution from fossil fuels costs the world US$8 billion every day: Greenpeace study A report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, and Greenpeace Southeast Asia has found that air pollution caused by fossil fuels costs the world US$8 billion every day. That's roughly 3.3% of the world's GDP. This is the first such report to specifically assess the cost from burning oil, gas and coal. The most costly pollutant is microscopic fine particulate matter, or PM 2.5. It accounts for more than $2 trillion per year in damages. Some 40,000 children die every year before their fifth birthday due to PM 2.5.
